My connection to the island began 25 years ago when I bought property in Catherine Cove. My wife Margaret and I lived there for five years running the Wilderness Resort and getting to know that part of the Island intimately. We planted hundreds of native trees and shrubs on land that had been cleared and fenced and in our leisure time enjoyed fishing and diving. The Catherine Cove property is leased now but we now own property in Waikawa Bay and hardly a week goes by without spending time there. My hope for the project is that we can restore the island to a more natural state, especially in terms of native bird life, and I also hope that the project will create more interest in D’Urville generally and so benefit the people and community of this precious and unique place.
