A photographer, conservationist, businessman, Forest and Bird Ambassador, OHMS, I have a long term smouldering love affair with D’Urville Island that began five decades ago when we would stay glorious summer weeks at our bach on Brian and Shirley Woodman’s farm in Greville Harbour.

I recollect finding native galaxiids in the streams, moa bones in the dunes, richly coloured alum caves and the glorious coastal forest of the Mill Arm. A life of conservation battles to save our native forests has kept me busy and away from the island’s treasures but this project will bring it all back home for me. I’m delighted to know we have a great colony of bats in the Mill Arm’s forests and that we are now planning to give greater protection to them and all the island’s native flora and fauna.
